#WutTheEff - Anak ng Bawang! (Garlic prices are sky-high)

"Boy Bawang does not approve!"

Garlic - Expensive than Meat Nowadays
Recently, my little sister had a trip to Baguio and when she came back, she brought home some local Onions and Garlic/Bawang (the one I shot a pic for this post) because as she said, the price of those up north are cheap compared to buying the same items here in the Metro and you know what? She's damn right, especially with the "Bawang."

For the past few weeks if you happen to go down into the local market (Palengke) to shop around for raw ingredients, I guess many of you (especially the mothers) cannot help but raise an eyebrow when you see the soaring and skyrocketing prices of Garlic/Bawang; and why not? You will shelve out 250 Php to 300 Php for a kilo? Fantastically Outrageous!!

I love Pork Adobo and one of the ingredients for Pork Adobo is Garlic (Okay, you will need a little of it, but still it is a very important and integral ingredient of the dish).  Now, with the asking price of garlic as mentioned above, common sense tells me that a kilo of garlic has become pricier than a kilo of Pork/Meat nowadays.  Ano ba naman yun? Mas mahal pa ang bawang sa Baboy/Karne samantalang sangkap lang sa Pork Adobo ang Bawang? Hanep!!!

It is really sad to know that in an agricultural country like the Philippines - where local farmers can grow good quality garlic in bunches - the price of garlic is this high. The local government should do something about this and "fast".

This sudden increase in price in garlic will have its effect on a lot of products too. Imagine this; The longanisas (the ones that use garlic on it) will definitely increase its price too. Local carinderias will follow suit because they use garlic on most of the viands.  Hell, even your suking Mani Vendor will definitely think twice if you ask for additional garlic to your 5 Php or 10 Php purchase of a pack of nuts. Oh, and the popular cornick, Boy Bawang?...... (Okay, you do the math people)

The only ones that I can see that will benefit to this sky-high price of garlic are the "Asuwangs" (Aswang). Kapag walang bawang, walang panlaban sa Aswang. Tsk tsk tsk. We are lucky because my sis has just bought a bundle, just in case.

Seriously, this problem with Garlic prices is no laughing matter. It may not be a staple food like Rice, but still it is one raw ingredient that we Filipinos cannot live without.

Until this problem is solved, all I can say is..."Anak ng Bawang!"

Oh and Boy Bawang does not approve!

Until next time,

Ciao!
