More Like a Sonic "Precision" Screwdriver - The 11th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver Kit

"IMO, this thing should be called a Sonic "Precision" Screwdriver"

If you track back, I had a post some time ago about giving my little sister a "Doctor Who-related" gift. In that case, I gave her a Mini Light-Up TARDIS Kit (check that blog post HERE)

It seems to be that since we are Whovians, we cannot seem to get enough of Doctor Who stuff. I, for one, really wanted to have a "Sonic Screwdriver" replica of my own because I believe that besides the TARDIS,  the sonic screwdriver is the next iconic thing associated with the Doctor and Doctor Who itself. Problem is, Sonic Screwdriver replicas are rare and hard to find and to add to that, if you ever find one they are a little bit on the pricey side.

Fortunately, when I dropped by a newly opened hobby shop at our locale and while browsing at their lineup of Doctor Who merchandise, I saw the new stock of Running Press Mega Mini Kits and Lo and Behold, there is this Mini replica of the 11th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver in them.

Okay, checklist first: It is an official merchandise, a replica of the sonic screwdriver of my fave doctor, and it even has lights and sounds? Its price tag will also not cost you a limb? I then went on to buy it.

Upon opening the package, here is what is in it:

  • A tiny Sonic Screwdriver complete with lights and sound. It does not extend nor the claws collapse.
  • Also includes a mini, 47 page book (of good quality) all about the history of the Sonic Screwdriver.
  • The sonic screwdriver dimensions are approximately: 0.6″ diameter x 3.8″ long.
Here is my take on it: Looking at the Sonic Screwdriver itself, it is an all-plastic build (Devoid of any metal parts), depicting the 11th Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver in its claws opened-position. There is no way you can collapse those (a bit of a letdown). The good thing is, it contains a very good amount of detail that you will not mistake it for anything else than 11th's Sonic Screwdriver. That is one good thing about the Running Press' Mini Kits, they never compromise on the details (just like the TARDIS kit mentioned before).

One of the features of this replica is it comes with lights and sounds, so I checked both of that out:

Lights OFF
Lights ON
First things first, The light is operated by pressing a very small black button on the handle at the bottom of the replica. It is a good detail since you can really operate the light feature while holding the replica and brandishing it ala the Doctor. The light stays on as long as you are pressing the button. Now, the light has good detail as it shines a very bright and steady green light. However, the sound is a bit off. It does not sound like the one in the TV show (that is another letdown). I guess the right sound of the sonic is not too much to ask, right? Anyway, the light and sound is powered by three LR626 batteries (Included in the package, YAY!) and is also replaceable, so no need to worry when the batteries die out, you can pop 3 new ones in and continue the fun with the screwdriver.

The battery compartment
Since this one is a mini kit, it is obvious that the replica is small, or should I say "TINY". It is so small that if this replica is placed side by side with a real household screwdriver, it will be dwarfed in size.  IMO, this thing should be called a Sonic "Precision" Screwdriver instead since it looks more like a piece of a precision screwdriver based on its tiny appearance. Here, I placed it side by side with one precision screwdriver and they are almost identical in size, LoL!

All in all, this Sonic Screwdriver replica is a good one. The only things that are not working out for it is it is stuck in the opened position and has a "not so true to the TV series" sound. On the other hand, the level of detail is above average, the light is bright, and the batteries are included plus replaceable too. Being a little replica is a good thing too as this will be a great prop for little Doctor Who cosplayers. It is one quality product again from Running Press and a great addition to any Doctor Who merchandise collection.

Until next time,

Ciao!
