Super Friends Unite! - Pinoy DC Comics Fans gather for a World Record Attempt

Truly, friends do unite, as in "Super Friends Unite!"

Ever since I started blogging, it is really one of my goals to cover and blog about an event that is associated with cosplayers and cosplay, in general. Being a husband and a father, sometimes, my busy schedule and priorities come first, so I do not have the leisure of going to scheduled events especially if it does not align with my own schedule.

Fortunately, last weekend, the stars aligned...at last.

I work in the West Avenue area and after my day job,  I passed by The Block at SM City North Edsa and there was a big event happening there at that moment. Luckily for me, my trusty "Wan-Wan" was in my bag too, so I hurriedly pulled it out and embarked on an impromptu event coverage.

 A World Record Attempt

The above mentioned event happens to be the DC Comics Super Hero World Record Event. What it is, you may ask? For the uninitiated, this year, DC Comics is celebrating its 80th Anniversary and to commemorate the publication of the very first Superman story (in comics), DC asked it fans to help set a new Guinness World Record for the largest "global" gathering of people dressed up as characters from the DC Comics Universe for a period of 24 hours.

This Guinness world record attempt has a large scope as within the same 24-hour period, additional events took place around the world in Taiwan, Spain, Italy, London, United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Mexico, USA, and of course, here in the Philippines.

When it comes to breaking records, Filipinos are more than willing to participate and as a response to the call of DC Comics, the Filipino fans - dressed (from head to toe) as their favorite DC Universe character, i.e. Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman to name a few - trooped to The Block at SM City North Edsa to bolster the numbers, in the hopes of making it to the record books.

This is my first time covering an event and as first timers go, I had a few mistakes. One of them is having a prime lens instead of a flexible zoom lens in my kit (although since I am not aware of this event and the 50 mm is always in my camera, I guess it can't be helped). Due to this, most of my shots were in portrait orientation and having group shots was "really" out of the question; however, you know what veterans say about limitations in gear - "make the best of what you got", right?

Here are some of the photos that I snapped at the DC Superhero World Record Event:

Big Effort = Big Success:  Record Set!

As you can see in the pictures, the fans really came out with a big effort to help the attempt to set the world record. The meager pictures that I have cannot do justice to the amount of cosplayers who trooped and joined the event. This "Big" effort can only be equaled with only the same amount of success.

Fittingly, after the 24-hour period, DC Comics was proud to announce that a world record was set for most people dressed up as DC Comics Super Heroes/Heroines and thanked their legions of fans for participating in the event.

“Thanks to all the fans of DC Comics Super Heroes around the world who joined us to set a world record—a record that celebrates the power and appeal of these iconic characters.”

- Brad Globe, President of Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

All in all, the DC Comics Super Hero World Record event was a complete success and credit a great part of that success to the dedicated fans around the world, especially our very own Filipino Cosplayers. Truly, friends do unite, as in "Super Friends Unite!"

As the first event that I covered in this humble blog of mine, I can also say that this was a success (a little) for me and I am really looking forward to cover more events like this in the near future.

Until next time,

Ciao!
